In this class students will gain understanding of traditional Thai medicine teachings as relates to ethics that have been shared and upheld through time. This class has an extra focus on the brahmavihārās, Buddhist teachings on good will, compassion, altruistic joy, and equanimity, which we will view through the lens of a healing arts practice and look at how these qualities connect to modern medical ethical boundaries. We will also explore how ethics are taught in the oral tradition of ancient Thai medicine, and finish with a brief exploration of ethically navigating the practice of healing arts that come from different cultures.

This class contains, in unpacking the figureheads and history of ethics in healing arts in Thailand, a brief history of the Buddha and explanation of his teachings; this is presented in a non-proselytizing manner. The brahmavihārās, which stem from Buddhist and pre-Buddhist teachings, can be practiced and used for ethical reflection by people of any or no religious faith. Also, while this class draws from the teachings from traditional Thai medicine lore, you do not have to be Thai or follow Thai spiritual/religious practices to participate and learn, nor do you have to practice Thai massage/medicine to participate in and benefit from this class as it is designed to be of interest to healing arts practitioners of many modalities.

Class is self paced and may be started at any time. It is interactive and will count for live class hours in many states. Class meets Oregon Ethics requirement for massage license renewal. Students will have continued access to this class and class resources after the course is completed.

I created this class after taking yet another ethics class to renew my Oregon massage license that was simply someone reading from the NCBTMB and ABMP’s ethical guidelines; spending 4 hours on a list that I could read myself in 10 minutes. I wanted to provide an ethics class that didn’t just check a license requirement box, but actually provided something of interest that we might reflect on, converse on, and utilize in real ways to navigate our way through this complicated world. The feedback I have had on this class has been overwhelmingly generous as students have again and again shared with me that it was so much more for them than any other ethics class they have taken. This feedback never ceases to warm my heart and make me smile.
